Here is a BMW 318ti to start things off. The rules: only mass production hatchbacks count (over 500 units produced), it must have been available for sale in the US market, 4 door hatches count but wagons do not, RWD only, should have very hatchback like storage (no Nissan/Datsun Z cars, Toyota Supras, etc). So what other RWD hatches can you come up with?

Japan and Europe got much better versions of it, but the 240SX is still an awesome car (even though the engine is crap).
EDIT: Didn't see the Nissan/Datsun disclaimer, but you didn't mention the S platform!

The One-77 has a rear hatch. We have at least one of these in America, right?

It is a great little car. Another one I wish I had never let go of. Had to abandon the rusty pile of parts in a college apartment parking lot when I was moving away for my first job and the clutch was too shot to get the thing up the hill to leave. It was untitled, not registered, not insured, and the space where the passenger seat would normally reside was a gaping uncovered hole. It was fun, though.

Why wouldn't the Z cars and the Supra (mid 80s anyhow) count?
Those are as traditional of hatchbacks as I can think of.

Foreground car is the exact color of the one my sister owned in the '70s.

this rare beast
and its little sister
who went from Swedish to Italian the next generation
and her racier fraternal twin

Chevy Monza. One of these was my first car. Mine had the 3.8 Buick V6 and the Saginaw 4-speed. It made the same power as the Chevy 305 V8 but was far lighter so the car was nicely balanced and handled well. You could steer it with the throttle and I frequently did. It was a mini Camaro and fun to drive. It also had the worst interior of any car I ever owned. The hard plastic door panels literally were turning to dust, and the soft vinyl sun visors were rejected by Lada. The seats were the same as the ones in Camaros and Trans Ams and didn't recline. The back seat was surprisingly roomy; I never got to fuck there but my friend did while I was driving. Truckers were honking as I passed them that night. I traded it for a '74 Alfa Spider and never looked back.
